All Killer

As the default method of storing music becomes, ever-increasingly, to load one's computer hard drive with digital files obtained by fair means or foul, you might think that the record collector - that most obsessive type who combs charity shops and car boot sales for elusive slabs of crackly vinyl - is a dying breed. In actuality, it appears not; if anything, this consumerist sea change has made the whole exercise seem more esoteric and exotic.

Labels such as Finders Keepers are doing a lot to propagate this image: set up in 2005 as an offshoot of the Twisted Nerve label (best known for Badly Drawn Boy), they've made it their mission to reissue the rare, bizarre and valuable records they've discovered while digging. To this end, they've decided to pack the finest moments to date into one hour-long mix - the sort of freakishly danceable globetrotting beat blitz you might hear at a Finders Keepers DJ night - and got a chap called The Gaslamp Killer to do the honours on the decks.

Known to his mum as William, The Gaslamp Killer lives in LA but shares a zeal for dusty waxen sonics with his British counterparts here, to say nothing of hometown pals like Warp Records hot tip Flying Lotus. Even before Finders Keepers got in touch with him, he was a prolific purchaser of their output, and it's clear he's got love for the catalogue, using a total of 64 tracks across the mix. The presumed aim, to cram the creme de la creme into a limited space, is successful - our boy knows his way around a breakbeat and an atmospheric drop-out, but for newcomers to Finders Keepers All Killer serves as a tantalising taster that inspires you to snap up the full versions.

Genre-wise, we're taken with fleet fingers from 60s psychedelia to Turkish and Hungarian-flavoured rock to space-age jazz oddities to pure-hearted folk ballads. Listen out for tracks from Susan Christie, Bruno Spoerri and Ersen, to name only three. That said, as the chances are you won't know any of the names from Adam, dive in and bug out.
