One of the earliest cited progressive rock albums, this album was recorded with London Festival Orchestra and saw use of the mellotron as an instrument as well, I think. It opens up gently, before speaking (rather than singing) ruins the ending of the first song. I found the instrumental chops on this album, like on the song The Morning to be way better than the band's attempts at vocalizing.
However, despite some good peaks, Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn is ultimately a better exercise in this genre. And only 2 years later, King Crimson will release their hallmark debut album that will prove to be a cornerstone. This album might be lauded for historical reasons, but I don't think it aged that well.
