Great things are always expected from the prestigious Yash Raj label, and equally greater things from its soundtracks. Bachna Ae Haseeno is a title heavy with expectations, not least because it takes its name from a popular Bollywood song that was a craze in its day. Yet musical combo, Vishal & Shekar, somehow manage to deliver an average album.
Khuda Jaane is a mellow, contemporary track with some heartfelt vocals from KK and Shilpa Rao. It's not resounding, but still endearing; qualities that are removed by the remix.
Luckily, a cheerful track next: Lucky Boy. Brit-Asian sensation, Hard Kaur, features here with her husky vocals that integrate nicely with Sunidhi Chauhan's chirpy singing.
Unfortunately the barometer drops again with Aahista Aahista, sung by Lucky Ali. He's paired with the effervescent Shreya Ghosal, but even with her presence, the song fails – maybe because Ghosal's vocals aren't fully exploited, being reduced, essentially, to a background artist. The same goes for Small Town Girl, a disappointing, jiving Punjabi number sung by vivacious Shankar Mahadevan who is utterly wasted.
True to form in Yash Raj fashion, a soundtrack from them isn't complete without their classic family track, and Jogi Mahi is it for this film. With Sukhvinder Singh's brawny style, the song comes to life, though its lifespan sadly might not last long after the movie's release.
Luckily the great the title track is unconventionally set aside until the end. A revamped version of the original 1977 song composed by veteran RD Burman, this is the crown jewel of the soundtrack, with the late Kishore Kumar thankfully retained and accompanied by his singer son, Sumit Kumar. It's a successful rendition that ties the whole album together with a glittering bow.
