Great Australian dance acts have been few and far between over the years but with the release of their debut album The Avalanches look set to redress the situation. A Badly Drawn Boy remix and one of their members coming runner up in the DMC Championships would lead us to believe that this band are not short on talent. However, even a cursory listen to their album Since I Left You brings with it the realisation that gold has been struck. Ploughing a wide furrow, this record draws on a history of influences from hip hop, funk, soul, and big beat. The filter disco of "A Different Feeling" contrast nicely against the lazy breaks and John Barry-esque horns of "Frontier Psychiatrist". Whilst their clever sampling of Madonna's "Holiday" on "Stay Another Season" compliments the sweet pop of their, Radio 1 A listed, first single "Since I Left You" undoubtedly making this the soundtrack to the summer of 2001. This accomplished debut and a forthcoming tour in the UK make The Avalanches one to watch this year.
